Haru-Spring

  • On 1912, as a gesture of friendship Japan gifted to the USA, 3000 cherry trees, that are located on the northern bank of the Potomac River Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. On March 27 1912, the first tree was planted. In the first batch that was sent around 1910 there found that the trees were infected and diseased, so this was the second batch.

The event was held in celebration of a gift, by the Japanese government, of 3,020 cherry trees to the U.S. government. ... After World War II, cuttings from Washington's cherry trees were sent back to Japan to restore the Tokyo collection that was decimated by American bombing attacks during the war.

In 1981, cuttings from the trees to replace some cherry trees, were given to Japanese horticulturists in Japan, because of the destruction of their tress due to devastating flood.

In 2012, with the help of the U.S. National Arboretum, the USA send 3,000 American dogwoods to Japan. It took a couple of years, and lots of inspections, the trees were thoroughly inspected, sent to Japan.
